When do the European football competitions start and who are the favourites per country

It's been a great summer of sports so far with the Tour de France and Wimbledon, among others. But football fans have had to suffer through a few weeks of hardship. As August approaches, it's back to business as usual with the Eredivisie and major European football leagues starting. We've put together a list of which leagues start when and who the favourites are for the national title.

Belgium

The Jupiler Pro League gets off to an early start. The 2022/2023 football season kicked off on Friday, 22 July with the game between Standard Liège and AA Gent. The match was filled with goals and ended in a 2-2 draw. Later on in the first round, there was another top match, this one between Club Brugge and Racing Genk, ending in a spectacular 3-2 win for Brugge, with the winner being scored in the second minute of injury time. The Bundesliga is going to be a lot of fun to follow this season. England

The final phase of the Premier League last season was spectacular. Only it was not until the final minutes of the final day that Manchester City managed to secure the national title in fascinating fashion at the expense of Liverpool. Unsurprisingly, this year these two teams are once again seen as the biggest contenders. Yet, it will be interesting to see what Erik ten Hag can achieve at Manchester United. The season starts on Friday, 5 August with the game between Crystal Palace and Arsenal. Liverpool opens against Fulham, City visit West Ham and Manchester United get a visit from Brighton. Italy

After many years of drought, AC Milan finally clinched the national title again last season. For the upcoming season, however, they are not favoured to defend the Scudetto. The bookies consider Milan's city rivals Inter to be most likely to lay their hands on the title, closely followed by Juventus. Spain

Real Madrid dominanter the league last season and were crowned champions with quite a few matches to go. The big question is whether the teams that disappointed last season can manage to make the fight for La Liga exciting next season. Can FC Barcelona come back with all the acquisitions they have made? And can Atlético Madrid get back into the title race? Starting 12 August, the Primera Division is back in action.
