Sunday afternoon at 4:15 p.m., El Clásico returns. The match between rivals Real Madrid and FC Barcelona is itself one to turn on the television for, but with the lead at stake, the knives will be sharpened even more for this anniversary match.
In all competitions, this is the 250th time El Clásico has been played. In all those matches, Real Madrid emerged victorious just a little more often. Indeed, Real won 100 times, while FC Barcelona beat their nemesis 97 times. So both clubs are fairly evenly matched and this season that is reflected again. Both FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are on 22 points after eight games in La Liga.
That means it is number one against number two. FC Barcelona has a slightly better goal difference, but the lead is now at stake. The last time Real Madrid started the league so well was 40 years ago, when talso had 22 points after eight games. In addition, it Los Blancos lost only once in their last 32 home matches. That loss however came against, you guessed it, FC Barcelona, in the Catalans' famous 4-0 victory at the Bernabeu last season.
FC Barcelona is hard to pass up this season
So FC Barcelona also started the league excellently. In eight matches, only Alexander Isak managed to foist a counter goal on Barcelona. By comparison, Real Madrid has only kept a clean sheet once in those eight games, and that was last weekend. On top of that, the Catalans have been unbeaten away from home for the last 19 away games in La Liga.
FC Barcelona have scored 20 times to date, and they owe much of that to MVP Robert Lewandowski. Indeed, the Polish striker accounted for nine goals and three assists. This makes him twice as valuable to his club as Real Madrid's MVP Vinícius Júnior who still managed to get to a respectable total of five goals and one assist. Of all the players in the Spanish league, Lewandowski fires at the opponent's goal most often (30 times) and he combines that with a scoring percentage of 30%.
On top of that, FC Barcelona concede the fewest shots in the league and they themselves fire at goal an average of 18 times per game. There is one team that does slightly better and that is Real Madrid (19 times). The Madrilenians also excel in standard situations. In fact, of all the teams, it scored the most often from a dead ball (6 times). FC Barcelona is only a third of that number.
