France - Australia preview | Aussies smell blood against drama-engulfed French

On the third day of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, we will see for the first time first time the reigning world champion in action. France will take on Australia at 8 p.m. CET on Tuesday. France achieved great success under national coach Didier Deschamps successes, but hasn't the magic worn off a bit?

Indeed, France have been in dramatic form in recent months. The number four in the FIFA world rankings played a very lousy Nations League campaign against Croatia, Denmark and Austria. The French won only one of six games and lost as many as three. Over the nine games that France played last year, they conced up eight goals (0.9 per game) whilst netting an average of 1.6 per game themselves (14 in total).

The Australians, on the other hand, are in much better form. The country is currently ranked No. 38 in the world, but won six out of their last ten matches. Australia mainly owe that to the last few months, as they've won all five of their most recent matches. In addition to their six overall victories last year, Australia drew and lost their remaining four matches an equal number of times.

Arnold better than Deschamps

Despite their better form, Australia's goal scoring averages are slightly lower than France's. The Oceanians averaged scored 1.4 goals per game and conceded an average of 0.8. On the other hand, Australian national coach Graham Arnold has a higher winning percentage than is French counterpart. Arnold won 67% of his games with as national coach, while only 64% of the French games led by Deschamps resulted in victory.

Two French strikers on the hunt for records

In addition, one of the two French strikers is in the race to breaking Thierry Henry's goal scoring record, which currently stands at 51. Perhaps contrary to what you might expect, it is not Karim Benzema (who is missing the World Cup due to injury) (37) or Antoine Griezmann (42), but Olivier Giroud who is close to dethroning France's most legendary striker in history.

France and Australia have faced each other on five previous occasions. France were victorious three times with Australia winning once and the remaining game thereby ending in a draw. For France this World Cup will mark their 15th overall appearance at football's biggest tournament. Remarkably, it failed to make it through the group stage no less than six times. Australia only participated in a World Cup 5 times and only in 2006 did the Aussies manage to advance to the round of sixteen.

France-Australia ratio

However, the bookies are completely miffed about the form of both countries. Perhaps that offers a great opportunity to take a gamble on Australia. By doing so, you can earn 11.00 times your bet back. France's odd stands at 1.25, while a draw also looks at a nice return of no less than 6.00 times your bet.
