FC Barcelona need a small miracle to keep chance of wintering in CL

Barcelona in their own Camp Nou against Bayern Munich is probably the best fixture in this fifth round of the Champions League. Both superpowers usually stand for attacking, dominant football, have been known for years for their outstanding academies and the world stars that come out of it. There is a good chance Barcelona will be eliminated tonight as it depends on Inter's result against Viktoria Plzen. The Czechs must take at least a point in Italy and Barcelona must then beat Bayern themselves to keep their hopes alive.

Indeed, the record German champion is on twelve points after four matches, with only two goals against. In the match in Munich, the top clubs were evenly matched, but Bayern was more efficient: 2-0. That's another defeat for the Spaniards, the fifth in a row already against their German rivals. Barça failed to score in the last three matches between them, and everyone still remembers the gigantic 2-8 beating. The historical statistics do not speak in favour of coach Xavi's team. Nevertheless, the most recent results offer some hope and perspective.

Both top clubs are on a roll

In the last five games, Barcelona scored at least once per game. However, a goal by the home team barely gets you anything. Bayern also scores almost every match, making both teams scoring a fairly low quote. In the last seven games, however, the German club came up with more than 1.5 goals. That yields 1.85 times your stake.

So the bookies are expecting a goal-fest, and that Barcelona will also grasp its last straw with both hands. A loss means elimination in the group stage of the Champions League, which would be the second time in a row. Last year, Bayern Munich, of all places, caused the elimination. However, Bayern are already sure of the next round this year, AND Barcelona have strengthened well, including the opponent's top scorer Robert Lewandowski.

All eyes on Lewandowski

The Polish goalgetter has been stringing goals together for years, is La Liga's top scorer this season and runs 1.13:1. Lewa is undoubtedly Barcelona's most dangerous man; the Champions League is his playground. He is third on the all-time top scorer list behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. This season, Lewandowski leads the list along with top talent Erling Haaland and Liverpool's Pharaoh Mohammed Salah. A goal from him gives you a rating of 1.76.

Setback for Memphis

Less good news came out Tuesday about Memphis Depay's return. The striker was supposed to be part of the Catalans' selection last week, but is dealing with a setback. Memphis was out for a long time due to a hamstring injury. With an eye on the World Cup, national coach Louis van Gaal will not be happy that his star striker still has not been able to gain match rhythm.
