No points were earned at Wimbledon in the past two weeks, yet major changes are visible on the world rankings, published on Monday. The top three Dutch tennis players have all risen, but Wimbledon winner Novak Djokovic has plummeted.
It were excellent grass weeks for Botic van de Zandschulp, Tallon Griekspoor and Tim van Rijthoven. The excellent results in the preparation were continued at Wimbledon and with that tennis is coming back to life in The Netherlands. No points could be earned for the world ranking, but all points from last year were lost. And that ensures that the Dutch still benefit, because they had few points to defend and players above them have to surrender places.
Van de Zandschulp was eliminated in the fourth round by Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon and missed out on a lot of points for the ATP ranking, but the tournament did earn him a nice sum of money. In the rankings, 'VdZ' is approaching the top-20. He climbs from rank 25 to 24. Tallon Griekspoor makes a bigger jump. He exchanged rank 53 for rank 47 and thus enters the top-50, for the first time in his life. Tim van Rijthoven slowy edges closer towards the best 100 players in the world; he now occupies rank 103. This week the player from Roosendaal will be in action at the ATP tournament of Newport.
Djokovic drops sharply, Federer loses ranking
Novak Djokovic was able to add Wimbledon title number seven to his impressive record on Sunday. The Serbian showed that he is still the grass king and is far from finished on the tour. A minor problem is his position on the world ranking list. He had to give up the first place to Daniil Medvedev some time ago. After Wimbledon, Djokovic, who lost his 2000 points from last year, dropped even further, to seventh.
Roger Federer can no longer be found at all in the ATP rankings. The Swiss has been injured for quite some time and has lost all the points he had accumulated over the past two years. The former world number one wants to pick up his racket again as soon as he has recovered from his knee injury and is aiming for a comeback at the end of September. To get direct entry into tournaments he is dependent on wildcards. But with Federer's status and accumulated reputation, that should not be a problem.
