Brazilian national coach Tite has caused a resounding surprise by choosing Richarlison over Roberto Firmino, among others. Tite announced his final squad for the 2022 World Cup on Monday afternoon, but the Liverpool striker was not among the names. Former Liverpool-star Philippe Coutinho will also miss the World Cup,
The choice for Richarlison is notable because the Tottenham Hotspur has not played since October due to an injury. The phlegmatic forward is expected to be back in training this week, but is thus likely to travel to Qatar without proper match rhythm. Over the past few weeks Richarlison missed out on the top games against Manchester United and Liverpool, among others. Even before his injury, the Brazilian was not an undisputed startier for Spurs-manager Antonio Conte. In the nine Premier League games Richarlison played this season for Spurs, he was allowed to start only four times. He did not score in those nine games.
His call up seems to be based on his good performances for Brazil. As recently as September, Richarlison played against Ghana and Tunisia, in which he to find the net three times. He was also on target in World Cup qualifying. With six goals, Richarlison had a significant share in his nation qualifying for the final round in Qatar.
Still, Tite's decision is striking to say the least. Now it is not as if Brazil does not have capable replacements. Roberto Firmino is a starter at Liverpool and has already been involved in nine goals during this Premier League season. He played six times in qualifying, in which he managed to score three times. Firmino was also in the squad in September, although he did not make an appearance.
Another player some fans expected to be there is Philippe Coutinho. The current Aston Villa player also scored three times in qualifying, although he was not part of the squad back in September. Coutinho was involved in most of Brazil's goals during the previous World Cup, in Russia. With two goals and two assists, he was the MVP for his country at the time, though Brazil did not make it past the quarterfinals.
Despite the absent players, Brazil still have an attack that many a country will envy. Tite has selected no fewer than eight forwards, including Vinicius Junior, Antony, Gabriel Jesus and Neymar.
